Eldenaer Jazz Evenings
The Eldenaer Jazz Evenings are an Open Air - Music Festival , which on two days a year (Friday and Saturday) in early July before the ruins of the monastery Eldena in Greifswald takes place. They are considered “one of the coolest jazz festivals in Germany. The ruins of the Eldena monastery offer several hundred listeners good acoustics and an optimal view of the stage. "
history
In 1981 the Eldenaer Jazz Evenings were founded by students from the University of Greifswald . The first time it came to the encounter of musicians from different social systems: from the then Western countries, the Federal Republic of Germany , traveled Albert Mangelsdorff on; Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky and Günter Baby Sommer represented the German Democratic Republic . There was also Andrea Centazzo from Italy .
Until 1989 the festival was carried out by the student "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Jazz"; In 1990 the cultural office of the city of Greifswald and the art association ART 7 took over the organization. Even after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the concept of the festival remained to invite musicians from the eastern and western federal states and to bring in some international artists. For example, in 2010 the Zentralquartett , the NDR Bigband , Klaus Doldinger and Al Di Meola were invited. Tilo Braune , one of the founders, decided on the program selection for three decades ; he was followed by Roland Schulz, who has been setting the festival program together with the Greifswald Cultural Office since 2013.
For more than 20 years, the NDR has been recording all of the festival's concerts. Older recordings by Abdullah Ibrahim , Betty Carter , Uschi Brüning and Heinz Sauer were broadcast again in 2013 during a long jazz night.
