Elena [ ɛˈlɛnɐ ] ( Bulgarian Елена ) is a town in central Bulgaria in the Veliko Tarnovo Oblast (Veliko Tarnovo administrative district). It lies at the foot of the Balkan Mountains (Stara planina) .
Neighboring towns are: Veliko Tarnowo , Kotel , Sliven , Jambol , Elchowo , Nowa Sagora , Stara Sagora , Kazanlak , Gabrowo , Gorna Orjachowiza , Levski , Bjala , Razgrad , Popowo and Targovishte .

During the Ottoman rule in Bulgaria, many freedom fighters hid in Elena. B. Wassil Levski .
During the Russo-Ottoman War (1877–1878) , the Battle of Elena raged here .
The city is namesake for Elena Peak , a mountain on Livingston Island in Antarctica.
Attractions
The city has its appearance from the 18th and 19th centuries. Preserved in the 19th century, around 130 buildings from this period are listed. Evidence of this are also some streets that date back to the time of the Ottoman rule.
The first Bulgarian educational school Daskalownitsa , founded by Ivan Momchilov , father of the architect Petko Momchilov in 1844, houses the Elena City Museum - the Museum of National Revival and Liberation Struggles. The clock tower from 1812, whose original clockwork is still running, is nearby. The house where Ilarion Makariopolski was born , a building from 1710 to 1715, can also be visited. The Popnikolow House from 1830 is probably the most impressive building in the city, it was made almost entirely of wood.
In addition, the following sights are to be visited: the five Rassukanow houses (18th / 19th century) under one roof, the Nikola Church (Sweti Nikola) from 1804 and the Church of the Assumption of Mary (Uspenie Bogoroditschno) from 1837, which are made by masters the village of Bolerzi. Expressive wood carvings from the Tryavna school adorn both buildings. Unusually for the time, the Marien-Kirche is an impressive size. In the birth house of the writer Petko Ju.
