The sleeper gobies (Eleotridae) are a group of small to medium-sized fresh , sea and brackish water fish. They are a family of the perch relatives (Percomorphaceae). They live in freshwater and mangroves around the world .
features
Like all gobies , sleeper gobies have an elongated, cylindrical body with a round cross-section. The mouth is at the top or at the end. Unlike the gobies (Gobiidae), they have separate pelvic fins , but the fin base is close together or has even grown together. They always have two separate dorsal fins . The first has two to eight hard rays . Sleeper gobies have 25 to 28 vertebrae. Most species are between five and six inches long. With a maximum length of 60 centimeters, Gobiomorus dormitor is the largest representative.
distribution
Sleeper gobies live on tropical and subtropical seashores, mostly in brackish water . There are also pure freshwater species in the tropics, Australia and New Zealand .
Way of life
The fish live on the bottom of the water, often between plants. Many species are territorial and solitary, more rarely they live in small groups. Sleeper gobies are often active at night or at dusk. Most species feed on all kinds of small animals, such as insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and fish larvae. Some species also eat algae. They are substrate spawners who lay their eggs in caves, on stones or on water plants. Both parents or the males guard the brood until the fry have hatched.
