Elgin ( pronunciation : [ ˈɛlɡɪn ]) is a city in Bastrop County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located at the junction of US Highway 290 with Highway 95, about 25 km north of Bastrop in the north of the county in southeastern Texas and has a total area of ​​12.2 km² without any significant water surface.

history

In 1871 the Houston and Texas Central Railway moved its tracks through this area and built a supply depot on the site of what is now the city called Glasscock . A year later the place was renamed Elgin in honor of Robert Morris Elgin , a railroad surveyor. In 1886, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad added another railroad connection and Elgin became the area's freight center for cotton and cattle.

In 1890 the population had grown to 1,100 people and at the beginning of the 20th century, coal mining began in a nearby mine. In the 50s, a sausage factory was built, which achieved national recognition with its Elgin Hot Sausage and laid the foundation for the city's current nickname.
