Elizabethtown is a city with the status of City and at the same administrative center ( the county seat ) of Hardin County in the US -amerikanischen State Kentucky with 29,335 inhabitants (2012).
geography
Elizabethtown is about 50 kilometers south of Louisville and 20 kilometers southeast of Fort Knox . The Interstate 65 highway runs through the eastern boroughs of Elizabethtown.
history
The first settlers settled in 1793 in the place, which in the founding year 1797 was then called Elizabethtown after the first name of the wife of the settler Andrew Hynes . When the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was built in 1854, the city experienced a strong economic boom. It acquired a high degree of strategic importance during the Civil War . Several of the city's ancient buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places .

Today Elizabethtown continues to grow industrially and commercially. Due to the favorable climatic conditions and a long tradition, also due to the Kentucky Derby taking place in nearby Louisville, several horse breeding businesses and riding stables are located in and around Elizabethtown .

The median age of the residents in 2012 was 35.4 years, below the Kentucky median of 40.1 years. 12.1% of the current population are of Irish origin.
