Leopold Schnabl , Jewish name : Elkan Löb (born December 9, 1846 in Pohořelice , Margraviate Moravia , Austrian Empire ; † September 15, 1890 in Gleichenberg , Austria-Hungary ) was a Moravian - Austrian optician , ophthalmologist and consul of Argentina in Austria Hungary.

Life

Leopold Schnabl was born on December 9, 1846 as the son of Max and Josefine Schnabl (1826–1905) in the small town of Pohořelice in South Moravia. He had a brother, Theodor. Schnabl was brought up in the Mosaic faith and came to Italy around 1870 after completing school and university , where he initially worked as an optician in Perugia . After accepting the title of professor of ophthalmology, he went to Milan in 1876 , where he only worked for a short time. In the following year, 1877, Schnabl moved to Argentina , where he opened the first ophthalmic institute, the so-called Instituto Óptico Oculistico , on Calle Florida ( Via Florida ) in the capital Buenos Aires . This brought him big profits soon afterwards, whereupon he opened another such facility in Montevideo , the capital of Uruguay . After 1882 Schnabl returned to the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy as consul of Argentina. After he had initially lived in Budapest - in April 1885, Emperor Franz Joseph approved the acceptance of the post awarded to Schnabl as Argentine consul in Budapest - he came to Vienna shortly before his death to settle here. In the years 1884-1885 he had lived almost a year in Vienna, where he sometimes because of defamation was sued and convicted subsequently. In the same month of his official confirmation as Consul of Argentina in Budapest, Schnabl was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Crown of Italy by the Emperor .

With the experience and knowledge he had gained in Argentina, he felt obliged to return to Austria to write a book about the Argentine capital and all of its facets. The book was published in the autumn of 1885 by the Levy & Müller publishing house in Stuttgart and received consistently positive reviews. On October 19, 1886, after a performance in the Orpheum , Schnabl was attacked and physically assaulted by another theater-goer while leaving the hall, where he sustained a bleeding head wound. A little over a year after he had published his book, Schnabl uncovered the famous mail thief Philemon Zalewski , who had only recently been arrested in the United States, on a train ride from Vienna via Salzburg . He had disguised himself as a woman in order to remain unrecognized. However, Schnabl's discovery did not lead to arrest, as the police inspector on the train found everything to be in order when checking the passports. This incident was reported for several weeks in the Austrian newspapers in the summer of 1887. In the course of his work as consul, he turned to the Austrian daily newspapers with letters to the editor in order to criticize reports published by them, especially about Argentina, and to correct statements made in the process.

Schnabl, whose Jewish name was Elkan Löb , died on September 15, 1890 at the age of 43 while he was taking a cure in the south-east Styrian spa town of Gleichenberg (known as Kurbad since 1926 and known as Bad Gleichenberg) . Schnabl, who was staying in Gleichenberg for a cure with his son Ricardo, had a hunting accident on September 9, 1890. While driving to the hunt in the vicinity of Gleichenberg, a loaded rifle fell out of the car and discharged, whereupon a load of shot hit Schnabl's neck. According to the from Graz summoned doctor Prof. Dr. Ebner's life was not in danger for Schnabl at that time. The doctors Johann Schnitzler and Otto Zuckerkandl , who were summoned from Vienna, also found Schnabl's condition not to be life-threatening. Schnabl died on the morning of September 15, 1890 when he suffered a hemorrhage while inserting a tube for artificial feeding . As early as the end of May of the same year he had been on cure in Baden near Vienna . He was born by his mother Josefine, his wife Irma (née Schnitzler; * 1864; †?) And his three daughters Elvira (* 1884; †?), Mercedes (* 1887; †?) And Carmen (* 1890; †?) survived. Furthermore, his son Ricardo (* 1872 in Perugia; †?), Whom he had from his first marriage, survived. Until recently he was in charge of his institute in Buenos Aires. After his unexpected death, his body was transferred to Vienna on September 17, 1890 and buried there on the same day at the Central Cemetery .
