Rainer Elkar

Rainer S. Elkar (born March 10, 1945 in Neustadt an der Aisch ) is a German historian. He taught economic and social history at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich . His research areas are craft, educational, monetary and regional history.

Life

From 1965 Elkar studied history , German , art history and political science in Würzburg and Freiburg . He was a scholarship holder of the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst. In 1970 he passed the teaching examination for grammar schools in Baden-Württemberg. From 1973 he worked as a technical school teacher for politics in training for curative education professions at the Alsterdorfer Anstalten in Hamburg and as a research assistant at the University of Hamburg , where he received his doctorate in 1978 under Rainer Wohlfeil with the work Young Germany in Polemical Age .

Before that, in 1975 he became an assistant and later academic councilor and senior counselor at the chair for economic and social history (Harald Witthöft) at the University of Siegen and, from 1977, a member of the founding senate and the senate of the University of Siegen as well as deputy chairman of the convention. He stayed that way until 1992. In 1990 he was one of the co-founders of the Institute for European Regional Research, of which he was appointed Academic Director. In 1994 he completed his habilitation in Siegen with studies on the history of handicrafts.

He then took over a professorship at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich . From 1998 to 2010 he held a full professorship for economic and social history at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich . He has also been a member of the Advisory Board of the Bavarian Economic Archives since 1998. In 2007 he took part in an information defense exercise as a first lieutenant at sea . Finally, in 2010 he became a member of the University Council of Schleswig-Holstein .

He gained nationwide attention when he took a stand against Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg as his former supreme employer, when he warned in his doctoral affair: “Officers act in leadership positions. You must be committed to the principle of truth and act in an exemplary manner. Of course, this also applies to the defense minister. "
