occupation

Ella's Baby is a German television film directed by David Dietl from 2017 with Benno Fürmann and Tijan Marei in the leading roles.

action

After vacationing together in a tent camp in France with her best friend Janine, 16-year-old Ella discovers that she is pregnant by a young French man she met on vacation. At first, she considers having the baby aborted, but then decides to give birth and then find a foster family for the baby.

Father Roman is not enthusiastic about the idea: Ella is considered a talented basketball player and pregnancy would endanger her career. Roman hardly has time for his daughter, as he is also getting a driver's license in addition to his job. There are also constant conflicts between Ella and Roman's new girlfriend Ariane, who in turn does not get pregnant and therefore becomes jealous of Ella.

Since her friend Janine is participating in a school exchange, Ella's grandfather Karl is her only support. When he dies, she screams letters to her mother, but she only allows further contact to a limited extent. When Ella is in labor, the blended family pulls itself together and although Roman failed the driver's test, he drives his daughter to the hospital. There Ella gives birth to a healthy child.

criticism

"A sympathetic (television) comedy that tries to tackle serious family problems with a certain twinkle in the eye, whereby the conflicts are sometimes dealt with sensitively."

“'Ella's Baby' is not a pleasant film. The characters are too idiosyncratic for that, especially the two women do not allow themselves to be domesticated by the traditional rules of entertainment films. If the pregnancy makes Ella appear increasingly gentler and more balanced, that makes her - thanks to the varied and nuanced game of Tijan Marei - by no means a dearest figure of identification. With Katharina Schüttler's Ariane, the development goes in the other direction: As the plot progresses, it appears more and more brittle and angular. [...] On the other hand, Benno Fürmann is once again suitable for the masses, who seems to be made for these modern relationship partners and family fathers who, in humorous drama, admit that they are completely relaxed ('New in our family') and neurotic alert ('Less is more') understand charging. Not only the eponymous heroine has a weakness for short announcements ('I'm not abusing'), Fürmann's understanding of women also loves it briefly and encouragingly, and author Senft even lets him vary sentences from contemporary history: 'We can do it.'
