Ellington Airport ( Ellington Field ) is used as both a civil and a military airport . The US military designates its portion of the site as the Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base . Acquired by the City of Houston , Texas in 1984, Ellington Field now supports US military , NASA, and general aviation operations .
The airport was created in 1917 for the training of pilots of the United States Army Air Corps , was in the meantime operated by the United States Air Force and is now owned by the city of Houston. One of the largest aviation clubs in Texas is stationed at the airfield, and the annual air shows are held over Houston. Ellington Field is located approximately 15 miles south of downtown Houston. The airport is operated through the Houston airport system.
In June 2015, the FAA announced that a commercial spaceport would be built on the airport site under the name Houston Spaceport .
