Ellon ( Gaelic : Eilean Bhuchain or Ealain ) is a town in the Scottish council area of Aberdeenshire . It is located about 20 km north of Aberdeen and 20 km southwest of Peterhead on the Ythan . In 2011 Ellon had 10,268 residents. Ellon has been growing very rapidly for several decades. In 1951, only 1,491 people lived there.

Ellon was the market place and court in the former Buchan Province . During the Scottish Wars of Independence , Clan Cumming ruled Buchan. As part of the Harrying of Buchan in 1308, the men of the attacking Robert the Bruce Ellon burned down. In the 19th century, Ellon was a regional trading center.

Ellon is on the A90 between Aberdeen and Fraserburgh . At Balmedie , the A90 tapers from four to two lanes. However, there are plans to expand the road to four lanes south of Ellon for another eight kilometers. To the west the A920 leads over Oldmeldrum towards Huntly , to the northwest the A948 to New Deer .
