Elmar Mauch

Elmar Mauch (* 1927 in Pfullendorf ; † February 14, 2011 there ) was a German politician and from 1962 to 1995 Lord Mayor of the large district town of Bad Mergentheim .

Life

Born and raised in Baden , Mauch did his military service in World War II . After imprisonment, he studied law and political science . In 1953 he received his doctorate in law (Dr. jur.).

With his work at several authorities and ministries, he started the career of administrative specialist and was elected mayor of Bad Mergentheim for the first time in 1962 . At that time, Bad Mergentheim was the county seat of the Mergentheim district . He was re-elected three times, in 1970, 1982 and 1990.

Several important projects and measures fall into his 33 years of work in the town hall of the spa town. Examples are the several new school buildings, road construction, water and energy supply, the volunteer fire brigade , of which he was an honorary member, the development of residential and commercial areas, but especially the promotion of spa and tourism activities. It is precisely in this sector that Mauch is particularly committed - not least through his work in associations and organizations. It is largely thanks to him that the decline in the number of spa guests caused by the health reform was compensated for by the establishment of several special clinics.

In his second term of office, the Baden-Württemberg district and community reform fell , in which Bad Mergentheim lost its function as district town in favor of Tauberbischofsheim , but as a result of the incorporation of 13 previously independent neighboring communities, the urban population exceeded the limit of 20,000 and the city administration submitted the application was able to raise to a large district town , which the state government of Baden-Württemberg granted with effect from April 1, 1975.

He held the post of Lord Mayor until his retirement in 1995. He spent his retirement in his birthplace and hometown Pfullendorf, where he died at the age of 83.

Social Commitment

Mauch worked as a district chairman of the German Red Cross district association Bad Mergentheim eV for over 17 years .

Private

Elmar Mauch is considered the most important private collector in the field of historical copper engravings . In 1991 his collection already comprised more than 700 sheets.

Award

In 2004, Mauch was honored by the Baden-Württemberg City Council, along with 28 other mayors and lord mayors who had been in office for more than 30 years.

Appreciation

An appraisal by the Südwest Presse showed that Mauch's outlook on life had been shaped by Prussian virtues . In his office on the market square there was a demonstrative picture showing Frederick the Great . He justified his rejection of the promised honorary citizenship and the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class , with the words 'Above all, I have done my duty, and I do not ask for an award' . […] For 33 years, Dr. Mauch is at the top of the city and has also made a name for himself outside the region. He was ridiculed as the 'city king', dubbed a 'white-haired patriarch', feared as a brilliant rhetorician and respected as a person of respect. Even if it sounds like an empty phrase, Elmar Mauch has rendered outstanding services to the city and its development, especially in the spa and tourism sector. He was, in the best sense of the word, "a phenomenon".
