The Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary in Mehlem , a district of Bonn , is a Catholic chapel from the 17th century. It stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

The chapel was built on the site of a previous building that was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . It is located in the former Oberdorf and is possibly a foundation of the St. Matthias Brotherhood of Mehlem. The members of the brotherhood begin their pilgrimage to the Matthias basilica in Trier by the chapel every year until 2019 . Since 2019, the broadcasting ceremony has been celebrated alternately in Lannesdorf and Mehlem with the St Mathias Brotherhood Bonn-Lannesdorf, with this new system starting in Lannesdorf in 2019.

architecture

The Chapel to the Memory of the Sorrows of Mary has a seven-sided central building made of quarry stone with an almost square western vestibule, which was originally opened by three round arches. These were probably walled up in the 19th century and at the same time the trachyte portal was built with the year 1681. The curved hood of the central building merges with the hipped roof of the vestibule. The roof is crowned by a lantern with a curved hood. Four windows give daylight to the interior. In 2011 the roof was renovated and covered with natural slate in an old German roofing.

Furnishing

The Lady - altar with a Pietà of 1683 is left of an Anna-Selbtdritt group and right of a sculpture of the apostle Matthias framed. The baroque altar structure with columns is crowned by the representation of the Holy Trinity : a crown stands for God the Father , the wounds for Christ and the dove for the Holy Spirit , who pours out in licking flames.

The chapel is cared for and decorated at festive times (e.g. Advent, Christmas, etc.) by local residents and members of the above-mentioned St. Mathias Brotherhood Bonn-Bad Godesberg-Mehlem.
