The Elsa Brändström School is a grammar school in the southern part of Hanover, in the immediate vicinity of Eilenriede . The school is named after the Swedish philanthropist Elsa Brändström .

history

The Elsa Brändström School was founded in 1954. It emerged from the separation from the Wilhelm Raabe School , which reached its capacity limit due to the increasing number of pupils. In 1960, construction began on the building on Elkartallee, which was completed in 1963. Until 1970 the Elsa-Brändström-Schule was an all- girls high school with around 850 students; in the following year the first boys were admitted to the 5th grade. The school developed into a coeducational school. When the orientation level was introduced in 1976, the school lost grades 5 and 6. In 2004, when the orientation level was abolished, grades 5 and 6 returned to the school. Due to the insufficient reception capacity, the Elsa Brändström School was given its own branch in the immediate vicinity on Altenbekener Damm . In 2009 the school was relocated due to necessary and extensive renovation work on the building. For 18 months the grammar school was housed in the building of the former pedagogical college of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hanover . In the summer of 2010, the entire school and teaching staff returned to the main building on what was then Elkartallee, now Hilde-Schneider-Allee.

The Zirkus-AG also presents its show once a year. At the robot group, the students in grades (5 to 8) independently learn the technical programming of a robot with which they can then take part in competitions. The Ski-AG offers eighth and ninth graders the opportunity to learn to ski and snowboard or to perfect existing skills at the beginning of the year. For this purpose, the students travel to Chandolin in Switzerland for a week, accompanied by trained and committed teachers .

The tutors, made up of 8th grade students, help fifth graders gain a foothold in their new school and accompany them during the first few weeks.
In the 11th year, the students then choose teachers as tutors who will be at their side with advice and support until they graduate .

In the 6th and 8th grades, one-week school trips to a wide variety of destinations in Germany take place. In the 12th year, the students go on a study trip and head for international destinations.

building

The school building was designed by the architect Werner Dierschke , who u. a. planned the Bugenhagenkirche in the immediate vicinity of the school. Dierschke created the break hall, which was designed as a "meeting room" and is still considered the center of school life today. The break hall is square in shape and supported on the sides by columns.

The classrooms of grades 5 to 7 have little gardens available, which are available as an “intimate free class room” in summer.

In front of the school building is the sculpture "Taseo", which was designed by Ludwig Gabriel Schrieber . The sculpture is the symbol of the school and an informal meeting place for high school students. It shows female figures standing together and shaking hands.

Since the 10.8 million euro renovation in 2010, the building has been generously equipped. There are 28 classrooms, 16 specialist rooms and 2 sports halls.

In 2002, the upper level wing was inaugurated. It replaced a dilapidated pavilion. The new upper level wing, which includes four classrooms, a student library and a teachers' room, was financed by a donation from the patron Henning von Burgsdorff.

The toilets of the students are also based on a “lounge” or a “convertible bar”. The toilet rooms were designed by art students under the direction of the artists Yasemin Ylmaz and Burhan Uzunyayla.
