from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emilie is a female given name .

Origin and meaning

Emilie is actually as Aemilia (also Aemiliana ) the feminine form of the Latin noun gentile Aemilius and therefore means "from the sex of the Aemilians ", which in turn is derived from the Latin aemulus 'rival, competitor'. A suburb of Rome was called Aemiliana in ancient times .

The name died out in post-ancient times and was practically unknown throughout the Middle Ages and early modern times . It only became widespread and popular again through the success of the male given name Emil in 1762; Emilie is the feminine variant of this .
