Julius Caesar returns to Rome after his campaign against the Gauls . He plans to implement new reforms and reform the Senate . His nephew Octavius is supposed to help him. But not all senators are convinced of Caesar's will. Cassius and Brutus in particular see this as the downfall of the republic and therefore try to win Mark Antony over for themselves.

In the meantime, Caesar gets to know the gladiator Sertorius, who has proven himself in the arena and is now given freedom by the emperor . In return, Sertorius is said to be Caesar's bodyguard. He, who had previously lived in a slave colony with his wife and son , then moved to the capital.

One day - on the Ides of March - Sertorius is supposed to protect Caesar when his wife comes home screaming: Their son Piso was kidnapped in the market. Sertorius can barely save his son, but Caesar, who would have needed his help most, is brutally murdered in the Senate. In death, Caesar Sertorius entrusts his nephew Octavius. Together they flee Rome - the Senate henchmen behind them.

Part 2

The Dictator's Legacy (German first broadcast: February 13, 2006)

While Cassius and Brutus consider taking Caesar's corpse out of the city, making it disappear and thereby erasing the myth of the emperor, Sertorius and Octavius were able to escape successfully. But Octavius is skeptical that he should be Caesar's heir. When he learns of his murder, he rides to Rome, against Sertorius' wishes, to meet Senator Cimber, whom he believes has a loyal ally. But his daughter Titiana, with whom Octavius sleeps one last time, reveals Octavius to Cimber, who has switched sides. Only with the help of Sertorius is Octavius able to escape.

Cassius and Brutus learn from Marcus Antonius that Caesar's last will to appoint Octavius as his heir has been set down in writing. The soldiers then take Caesar's house apart and arrest Octavius' mother Attia. At the last moment she succeeds in handing the scroll to Senator Cicero, to whom it is given to the Vestal Virgin Camane for safekeeping.

Mark Antony mobilizes the people. This is opposed to the senators when they want to remove Caesar's body. According to Roman custom, Caesar is burned.
