Engelbert III. (Spanheim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engelbert III. (* before 1124; † October 6, 1173 ), from the Spanheim family , was born the second oldest of six children. His parents were the later Duke of Carinthia , Margrave Engelbert II of Istria , and Countess Uta von Passau from the house of the Diepoldinger Rapotonen .

Live and act

In 1124 Engelbert's father became Duke of Carinthia . This then gave him the margraviate of Istria and the Bavarian county of Kraiburg . However, he only used the title of Margrave of Istria occasionally. Mainly he carried the title of Margrave of Kraiburg or Margrave of Marquartstein , which were properties from his mother's house in southeastern Upper Bavaria, where he mainly stayed.

In 1135 Engelbert took on the council in Pisa as envoy of Emperor Lothar III. part, with the request of the emperor to stand by the pope. There he was enfeoffed by Pope Innocent II with the Margraviate of Tuscia . Engelbert only stayed there for a short time: until around the middle of 1136.

In 1140 he made some donations to church institutions before a planned pilgrimage to Jerusalem in Chiemgau .

Engelbert III. wanted in 1147 the call of Pope Eugen III. follow to the second crusade to the “promised land”. However, it then appears that he never made his journey to Jerusalem. It can still be documented in Bavaria.

In 1156 Engelbert took part in the Reichstag in Regensburg. There he appeared, together with his brothers, Duke Heinrich V of Carinthia and Bishop Hadwig of Regensburg, as a witness in the document of Emperor Frederick I , in which the previous margraviate of Austria was elevated to an independent duchy.

Margrave Engelbert III. was married to Mathilde, daughter of Count Berengar I von Sulzbach , since 1140 . She died in 1165. There were no children from this marriage. Since Engelbert did not marry again, he died childless in 1173. Engelbert's possessions were largely divided up in the Spanheimers' house. His brother Rapoto I , Count von Ortenburg , and later his son Palatine Rapoto II acquired large areas in Upper Bavaria around the county of Kraiburg , the headquarters of these possessions were Kraiburg and Marquartstein . The margraviate of Istria was lost to his family, however, it was given to Berthold III by the emperor . awarded from the house of the Counts of Andechs .

In Kraiburg am Inn today Graf-Engelbert-Strasse is named after him and his father Engelbert II.
