Engelbert Kobald (born August 28, 1848 in Matrei in East Tyrol , † April 26, 1926 in Leoben ) was an Austrian physicist and mathematician .

Life

Kobald studied physics and mathematics at the University of Innsbruck from 1868 to 1871 with Anton Baumgarten , Leopold Pfaundler and Hocke and from 1873 to 1875 thanks to a scholarship at the universities of Berlin and Heidelberg with Heinrich Wilhelm Dove , Hermann von Helmholtz , Gustav Robert Kirchhoff , Leo Koenigsberger , Leopold Kronecker , Ernst Eduard Kummer and Karl Weierstrass . He also worked at Helmholtz in the laboratory.

On November 10th, 1875 he was awarded a doctorate at the University of Innsbruck with his dissertation on the infinitely small vibrations of a vertical thread loaded with any number of heavy mass points. phil. PhD. Immediately afterwards he submitted the application for his habilitation and his habilitation thesis On the partial differential equations for oscillatory movements in a homogeneous crystalline medium and on December 29, 1875 he was awarded the Venia legendi for higher mathematics and physics at the University of Innsbruck.

In 1876 he was appointed associate professor for higher mathematics and physics at the Bergakademie Leoben and there in 1887 a full professor, an office he held until his retirement in 1919. He was ranked second for professorships in Innsbruck (1890) and Graz (1892), but did not get a chance. In the years 1891/92, 1892/93, 1902/03, 1909/10 and 1910/11 he was rector of the Montanistische Hochschule in Leoben. In 1916 he was appointed councilor .

Kobald mainly dealt with mechanical heat theory , hydrodynamics and optics . He set up a physics institute in Leoben for the first time and expanded physics classes. The new building of the Montanist University was opened under his rector's office.
