Engelbert von Brabeck (* unknown; † December 20, 1620 ) was electoral councilor and canon in Münster .

Life

Origin and family

Engelbert von Brabeck came from the Westphalian noble family von Brabeck , which had its origin in Vest Recklinghausen . He was the son of Wolter von Brabeck and his wife Kiliana von Westhofen zu Letmathe and had six siblings: Walter (1577–1626 Canon), Schonebeck (∞ Anna von Letmathe, son Johann was Canon), Jürgen (Drost in Oer), Engelbert (Canon in Speyer and Münster), Heinrich (Canon 1615–1618) and Westhoff (∞ Anna Ursula von Landsberg, whose sons Ludolf Walter , Jobst Edmund and Johann Ernst were canons in Münster. Their son Engelbert (* 1621) was canon in Hildesheim ).

Act

In 1582 Engelbert became canon in Münster and took his oath of office as cathedral bursar here on July 29, 1595. On May 17, 1597 he was elected provost of the old cathedral in Münster . He retained this office until his death. In 1613 he was appointed by Elector Ferdinand to the commission for the restoration of the Catholic religion in Niederstift Münster and held the rank of Princely Councilor. After the death of the cathedral choirmaster Heinrich Droste zu Vischering , the cathedral chapter elected him on July 27, 1620 as his successor. Engelbert was buried on December 28, 1620 in Münster Cathedral. Its epitaph is in the north wing of the cloister. In his will of October 23, 1616, Engelbert stipulated that large parts of his property should benefit church institutions. He also thought of his siblings, including the sons of his late older brother Johann.
