Entandrophragma is a genus of plants within the mahogany family (Meliaceae). The ten or eleven species are common in tropical Africa. Some species are important as suppliers of high quality wood .
description
Entandrophragma species are trees that usually reach great heights (individual specimens can reach more than 80 meters) and grow in the emergent layer. The leaves are pinnate in pairs, the leaflets are not further subdivided.
Entandrophragma species are dioeciously segregated ( diocesan ). The flowers are arranged in paniculate inflorescences . The unisexual flowers are five-fold. The five sepals are fused together at the base. The five petals look out of the calyx from the bud. The ten stamens have grown together to form a tube. The ovary is five-chambered, it develops into a woody capsule fruit . The central axis of the capsule fruit ( Columella ) is pentagonal in cross section. The seeds are winged on one side, with the wing in the capsule pointing towards the fruit stalk.
