history
The history of the Armenian Catholic community in New York began in the late nineteenth century. In 1896, the Patriarch of Cilicia , Stephano Bedros X. Azarian appointed the priest Mardiros Megerian to be pastor of the Armenian community in New York.
The the Patriarchal Vicar appointed Monsignor Margerian took care of the immigrant victims of the Armenian genocide . His successor, Monsignor Haroutyoun Maldjian, served the mission during the Great Depression from 1929 to 1933.
Pope John Paul II founded the Apostolic Exarchate America and Canada with the Apostolic Constitution Divini Pastoris on July 3, 1981. On September 12, 2005, it was elevated to an eparchy with the Apostolic Constitution Qui nuper successimus and received its current name. In 2012, the eparchy moved from New York City to Glendale. The church in New York was sold and while a new church was being offered the bishop decided to move the eparchy to Glendale as there were more Armenian Catholic families in that area than in New York.
