Erich Kasten (born May 24, 1949 in Münster ) is a German ethnologist who researches northern European indigenous peoples , especially in eastern Siberia.

Life

Erich Kasten grew up in Münster / Westphalia and studied at the Free University of Berlin . After completing a degree in economics in 1971, he studied ancient American and Scandinavian studies at the same university and received his doctorate in anthropology in 1984 with a dissertation on "Cultural change among the Sami " . Kasten later worked as a lecturer and researcher a. a. at the University of Victoria , at the Free University of Berlin and at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology .

Research and Teaching

For his dissertation project, Kasten carried out several years of field research among the Sami in Sweden . After completing his doctorate, he researched the Kwakwaka'wakw on the west coast of Canada . Since 1993 he has been conducting field research on Kamchatka regularly , where he particularly researches the languages ​​and cultures of the Itelmen , Evens and Korjaks . He has curated a number of exhibitions including B. at the Museum für Völkerkunde Berlin , at the Berlin State Library , in the House of World Cultures , in the Francke Foundations and in the Linden Museum in Stuttgart, and was involved in the production of the film “Chamissos Schatten” (2016) by Ulrike Ottinger involved. Among Kasten's former students at the Institute for Social Anthropology at the Free University of Berlin are Stephan Dudeck ( European University of Saint Petersburg ), Otto Habeck ( University of Hamburg ) and Michael Rießler ( University of Eastern Finland ).

From the beginning, Kasten has linked theoretical and applied ethnological research in the sense of open science . To promote applied research on the cultures and languages ​​of indigenous peoples, in 2010 he founded the Siberian Cultural Foundation, which is recognized in international research, and has since worked as its scientific director and managing director in Fürstenberg / Havel .
