In 1985, the University of Paris-Nanterre set up a branch in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines that became the Faculty of Law, Economics, Languages and the Humanities and Social Sciences. The University of Versailles-St-Quentin-en-Yvelines, founded on July 22, 1991, brings together all of these institutions.
In 2002 an Institut Universitaire Professionnel (IUP) for art, science, culture and multimedia was set up, and in 2002 the medical cluster in Garches was integrated into the UVSQ. Since then, it has had locations in eight municipalities and 13,372 students in the 2002/03 academic year.
