Erich Püschel (born October 9, 1904 in Röhlinghausen ; † June 24, 1991 in Bochum ) was a German professor of child and adolescent medicine and founder of the medical history collection at the Ruhr University in Bochum .

Life

He studied medicine in Münster , Königsberg , Prague and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1931 he received his doctorate in medicine, and in 1941 his habilitation in Münster.

From 1951 to 1972 he worked at the regional women's clinic in Bochum, initially as the chief doctor of the infant clinic, and from 1960 he took on the duties of director of the children's clinic. In 1963, an infection house was built that expanded the previous 135 beds by 80 places, and a nurses' home with 106 places was completed. Püschel played a key role in the design of the Bochum Infant and Children's Clinic, later the Bochum Regional Children's Clinic (now the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine of the Ruhr University Bochum in the St. Josef Hospital ), of which he was director until 1972.

From 1971 he also worked as an honorary professor at the University of Düsseldorf and from 1974 as a lecturer for the history of medicine at the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum. He was also active in the ethnomedicine working group.

Medical history collection

Medical history topics interested Püschel since the 1940s. The medical objects from the 19th and 20th centuries in his collection, mainly obtained from dissolving practices, include large devices such as X-ray machines and development series of medical devices. In 1990 he handed over the collection, consisting of 10,000 items and 5,000 books, to the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, but continued to strive to expand it with the aim of building up a teaching collection for the students that could also be used for research purposes. Since 1990 the collection has been in the Malakow Tower of the former Julius-Philipp colliery, which was expanded for university purposes .

Honors

In 1982 he was elected an honorary member of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Medicine because of his special services to pediatrics . He received an honorary doctorate from the Ruhr University in Bochum in 1984.
