Erich Wirth (born April 16, 1904 in Leppersdorf ; † December 22, 1981 ) was a German lathe operator and activist in the GDR . He later became vice president of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship .

Life

Erich Wirth was born in Leppersdorf as the son of a construction worker. He attended elementary school from 1910 to 1918 and then learned to be a machine fitter and lathe operator from 1918 to 1921 . In 1919 he became a member of the German Metalworkers' Association . After his apprenticeship, he became unemployed and went on a hike . From 1925 he worked as a lathe operator.

Wirth became a member of the Red Front Fighters League in 1924 and a member of the KPD in 1928 . From 1933 he was working illegally and was therefore arrested several times. In 1941/42 he obtained the master's qualification at evening school.

In 1945, Wirth was co-founder and head of organization of the local KPD group in Großröhrsdorf . In 1946 he became a member of the SED . Wirth attended the State Party School of Saxony in 1946. In 1947 he was a delegate of the 1st German People's Congress . From 1946 to 1954 he worked again as a lathe operator, foreman, head foreman, production manager and chairman of the planning committee in SAG and in VEB Sachsenwerk Radeberg . In 1950, together with Gustav Zabel , he introduced high-speed turning based on the Pawel-Bykow method in the GDR . He achieved a cutting speed of 1460 meters per minute. and was awarded the national prize for it as an activist . Wirth was a member of the People's Chamber from 1950 to 1954 , a candidate from 1950 to 1952 and a member of the Central Committee of the SED from 1952 to 1967 . From 1951 to 1958 he was vice-president of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship and from 1956 to 1958 he was head of department in the Ministry of Mechanical Engineering. From 1958 to 1961 he was head of the office for invention of the VEB Flugzeugwerke Dresden and from 1962 to 1973 head of the innovation center of the district economic council in Dresden . In 1974 he retired.
