Ernest Hauswirth OSB (born September 25, 1818 in Rausenbruck near Znaim , Moravia ; † March 4, 1901 in Vienna ; actually Gabriel Hauswirth ) was an Austrian Benedictine , historian and abbot of the Vienna Schottenstift .

Life

Hauswirth, one of eleven children of a Moravian peasant family, came after the visit of the Vienna Schottengymnasiums 1838 in the Scots Abbey and graduated in Theology at the University of Vienna . In 1843 he was ordained a priest , in 1847 he received his doctorate in theology . At the Catholic Theological Faculty he held lectures on church history (1845/1846) and morals (1847/1848 and 1848/1849) as a supplement ; In 1852 he was dean of the faculty. From 1848 to 1878 Hauswirth taught religion and history at the Schottengymnasium. From 1852 he was also entrusted with the office of the monastery archivist ; In this function, he wrote a comprehensive history of the house and arranged for the edition of all documents of the monastery from the foundation to 1418 - two still relevant works on the history of the monastery today.

After the death of Othmar Helferstorfer , Hauswirth was elected abbot of the Schottenstift in 1881 . One of his first official acts was the cession of the Hungarian Telki Abbey , whose owner the Schottenstift had been since 1702. He also developed a lively construction activity: He had the interior of the Schottenkirche redesigned according to the plans of Max Haas and Heinrich Ferstel (1883–1887) and the monument in honor of the founder of the monastery, Heinrich II. Jasomirgott, was built on the facade of the church. In Eggendorf im Thale and Enzersdorf im Thale , he arranged for the new parish churches to be built.

In 1884 Hauswirth was appointed a member of the manor house for life. He was also Komtur with the star of the Franz Joseph Order and Commander of the Leopold Order .
