Born in the Ore Mountains , Beckert learned the trade of a mining fitter. Around 1860 he began to investigate manufacturing methods for special latch needles for knitting machines . In 1871 Beckert founded his needle factory in Lugau , which he relocated to Erfenschlag a year later and to Chemnitz in 1884 .

Beckert's first patent in this field dates from 1882. From 1893 onwards Beckert was awarded gold medals for his knitting needles for the manufacture of hosiery and lace at numerous international trade shows, such as the world exhibition in Chicago in 1893 , the Berlin trade exhibition in 1896, the world exhibition in 1897 in Brussels and the world exhibition in 1900 in Paris.

In 1900 Beckert retired and moved to Meißen , only to take his retirement home a short time later, like many other wealthy pensioners in the Lößnitz . He settled in Radebeul at Rathenaustraße 4, where he died in 1909. Beckert was buried at the Radebeul-Ost cemetery, where his representative grave in black marble is adorned with life-size figures of the married couple made of white marble in relief.

In 1937 Beckert's company was merged with the needle manufacturer founded by Theodor Groz in Ebingen on the Swabian Alb in 1852 to become the world market leader in Groz-Beckert industrial needles ( Theodor Groz & Söhne & Ernst Beckert, needle factories Commandit-Gesellschaft, Ebingen and Chemnitz ) . A descendant of Beckert, as well as one of Groz, still runs what they call a family company.
