Baron Ernst Eberhard Cuno Langwerth von Simmern (born April 20, 1757 in Hanover , † July 28, 1809 at Talavera de la Reyna ) was Brigadier General of the King's German Legion .

origin

His parents were Georg Reinhard Langwerth von Simmern (born February 26, 1713; † May 3, 1778) and his wife Melusine Sophie von Kampen († 1792), a daughter of the Hanoverian general Christian Wilhelm von Campen (1667–1747). His father was an electoral British and Brunswick-Lüneburg Higher Appeal Judge and Landdrost.

Life

It was in 1769 ensign in the Life Guards and on September 16, 1777 lieutenant . On December 7, 1784 he came as a captain in the 8th Infantry Regiment, on May 26, 1795 he was major in the 13th Infantry Regiment before he returned to the footguard as a lieutenant colonel on September 19, 1799 . After the French invasion of Hanover, the army had to be disbanded according to the Artlenburg Convention . Like many officers, he went to the King's German Legion to fight the French.

On November 14, 1803 he was then appointed commanding colonel in the Legion's 1st Line Battalion and took part in the fighting in the Baltic States. In the autumn of 1808 he was transferred to Portugal to fight with Wellington in the Spanish campaign . In 1808 he was also appointed Brigadier General. He died on July 28, 1809 in the Battle of Talavera .

In memory of his death, a memorial was dedicated to him and to General Alexander Mackenzie, who also died at Talavera, in St Paul's Cathedral .

family

On June 28, 1796, he married Julie Georgine von Ahlefeld (February 2, 1764 - July 1, 1821), widow of Chamberlain Detlev von Ahlefeldt, a daughter of General Siegfried Ernst von Ahlefeldt . His brother Karl Christian Ludwig (* October 27, 1750; † July 6, 1803) was married to Wilhelmine von Ahlefeld, a sister of his wife. Langwerth and his wife had the following children:
