Ernst Friedrich Wernsdorf (born December 18, 1718 in Wittenberg ; † May 28, 1782 ibid) German Lutheran theologian and church historian.

Life

Born as the son of Gottlieb Wernsdorf the Elder and his wife Margaretha Katharina (née Nitsch), he first grew up in Wittenberg. After the early death of his father, his mother took over his upbringing and had him taught by private tutors until he was fifteen. One of his teachers at the time was Johann Andreas Boden. In 1733 he attended the electoral high school in Schulpforte under the rector Friedrich Gotthilf Freytag . He actually wanted to return to Wittenberg in 1735 to begin studying at the university in his hometown.

On the advice of his godfather Heinrich Klausing, he went to the University of Leipzig in 1736 to study theological sciences. In addition to Klausing's lectures, he had attended those of Christian August Crusius , Christian Weise (theologian) (1703–1743) and Karl Gottlob Hofmann . In his day, however, he first had to complete a basic course in philosophy. Here were Christian Gottlieb Jöcher , Johann August Ernesti and Johann Christoph Gottsched his teachers and he acquired there in 1741 the philosophical master's degree .

In 1742 he completed his habilitation with the font de Septimia Zenobia Palm. Aug. at the philosophical faculty. After rejecting a rectorate position in Naumburg in 1743, he traveled to Hamburg in 1745, where he applied for a professorship at the local high school. But without success. Instead he returned to Leipzig, became an associate professor at the philosophical faculty in 1746 and soon afterwards a member of the prince's college. He turned to theological questions, dealt with church history, literary history and antiquity in his lectures, and in 1750 earned a baccalaureate in theology. On May 16, 1752, Wernsdorf took on a full professorship in Christian archeology, obtained a licentiate in theology and in 1753 became an honorary member of the Society of Liberal Arts in Leipzig.

In 1756 he was appointed fourth professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg . After completing the disputation Historia linguae latinae in sac. Publ. Had a doctorate in theology, he took up that position on October 19, 1756, was associated with Ephorus the electoral scholarship holder and worked in Wittenberg until the end of his life. Wernsdorf also took part in the organizational tasks of the Wittenberg University. He was dean of the theological faculty several times and in the winter semesters 1760, 1766, 1772 and 1778 he was rector of the academy four times . He also represented the business of the university at the state parliament in Dresden.

family

Wernsdorf was married twice. His first marriage was on October 3, 1758 in Wittenberg with Henriette Ernestine Brendel, but she died after two years of marriage. The second was married on February 22, 1775 in Wittenberg to Eleonore Godelia Elisabeth, the daughter of Wilhelm Ludwig Nitzsch. He left a son who studied in Wittenberg.
