Ernst Georg Deuerlein

Ernst Georg Deuerlein (born July 22, 1893 in Erlangen ; † November 15, 1978 there ) was a German chemistry teacher in Nuremberg . He became known as a local historian in Erlangen and Franconia .

Life

Deuerlein was born the son of a jeweler from a Huguenot family and attended the Fridericianum grammar school in Erlangen . After graduating from high school, he studied natural sciences from 1912 at the Friedrich-Alexander University , allegedly also history for the teaching profession. During his studies he became a member of the Germania Erlangen fraternity , of which he later became an archivist for many years . From 1916 to 1918 he took part in the First World War. In 1919 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD .

In the same year he was a co-founder of the Erlangen Heimatmuseum and the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein, which he headed from 1923–1925 and 1958–1970 as first chairman. In 1921/22 he was a study assistant in Coburg and Rosenheim . He worked as a teacher at schools in Nuremberg, Coburg and Rosenheim. From 1922 until 1945 he was a teacher at the Technical University of Nuremberg Georg Simon Ohm , where he later became a professor. Very early on, he was really interested in the history of his hometown and Franconia . Since 1919 he has published several hundred mostly smaller articles in the Erlanger Heimatblatt, mainly on Erlangen's university, student, house and everyday history. From 1933 to 1945 he was in charge of the Erlangen city archive. In 1933 he campaigned for the preservation of the Erlangen Logenhaus , but presented it as an "Anti-Freemason Museum" in the spirit of National Socialism . He published anti-Semitic articles mostly in regional newspapers .

Deuerlein was released from his teaching post by the military government in the American zone of occupation after the war because of his membership in the NSDAP and the Red Cross. After his early retirement in 1949, he remained active as a lecturer at the adult education center and in numerous other functions. In 1954 he was a co-founder of the Erlanger Bausätze , the yearbook of the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein. In 1955 he became a member of the Society for Franconian History . From 1959 to 1971 he was a district home nurse. He put together an extensive collection of printed matter, newspaper clippings, graphics, photographs and contemporary historical documents on Franconia's regional and local history. It is one of the most valuable holdings in the city archive. It dealt with the Constantistenorden and the Amici Steno gestures and wrote - as the Association for corp student Historical Research was founded - for the yearbook then and now about Justus von Liebig (1957), about life as a student at the University of Altdorf (1959) and Johann Peter Lever (1963). He was awarded the Herman Main Medal for his fraternity historical research.

Remarks

  1. In Deuerlein's opinion, a promotion would have been due in 1938; the appointment was thwarted because Hitler reserved it personally. Therefore it was postponed until the end of the war.
