Ernst Gottschalk (born October 15, 1877 in Düsseldorf , † September 2, 1942 there , full name: Friedrich Ernst Gottschalk ) was a German sculptor .

Ernst Gottschalk was a member of the " Young Rhineland " association, Malkasten and later the "Rheinische Sezession". His work includes monuments, sculptures, portrait busts, reliefs and figural grave monuments.

Life

education

Ernst Gottschalk began training as a wood carver in 1892 at the age of 15 at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts . From 1904 to 1905 he studied at the Art School at Halleschen Tor in Berlin and, after working in Jekaterinoslaw , southern Russia, continued his studies from 1907 to 1910 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Rudolf Bosselt and Hubert Netzer .

Years as an artist

In the period from 1910 until his death in 1942, Gottschalk was a free artist member of the “ Young Rhineland ” association and later, after its dissolution, until 1938, a member of the “Rhenish Secession” association. He cultivated friendships with painters such as Otto Dix , Otto Pankok , Heinrich Nauen (the teacher from Dix), Werner Gilles and sculptors such as Ernst Barlach , Georg Kolbe , Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Arno Breker , which he renounced as this for the Nazis to began to work, which Gottschalk refused. He had a close and friendly relationship with Johanna Ey .

Last years of life

In 1935 Gottschalk helped the Jewish sculptor Bernhard Sopher to escape at the last minute and thus saved him from internment in a camp and probably from certain death.
