In the tree nursery of the Treptow district in Plänterwald , he set up a test hedge system from 1919, in which over time around 70 different trees were subjected to a suitability test for use in parks.

In 1924, district garden authorities were founded in Berlin. Harrich headed the Treptower office until 1936. The administration had its seat at Treptower Chaussee 52 (since 1949 Puschkinallee ), where Harrich had his apartment until 1941 according to the Berlin address book. On his 25th anniversary in service, he was honored as follows in the magazine Die Gartenkunst of the Association of German Garden Artists :

“Already in the preservation of the historical facilities, the Treptower Park and the Plänterwald, we encounter the expert who, with full understanding for the artistic ideas of Meyer and Mächtig, maintains, renews and manages what has become. The company's own creations, be it jewelry systems, playgrounds, cemetery expansions or the Wuhlheide public and forest park, show a matter of course in terms of structure and structure that they are evidence of a mature will to design in garden art. Careful working through of the planting, careful processing of the technical special equipment and skilful integration into the environment give every system a harmonious sound. "

Ernst Harrich died in Berlin in 1941 at the age of 55. His grave is in the Luisenstadt cemetery in Berlin-Kreuzberg (field 26).
