Ernst Hegenbarth
Ernst Hegenbarth (born March 5, 1867 in Ullrichsthal , Bohemia , † June 14, 1944 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor .
Life
Ernst Hegenbarth first attended the glass school in nearby Steinschönau before studying with Otto König in the sculpture class of the Vienna School of Applied Arts from 1885 to 1892 . After that, Hegenbarth successfully devoted himself to building sculpture and worked for the sculptor Theodor Friedl . He carried out numerous works for the architects Fellner and Helmer . In 1907 he joined the cooperative of visual artists in Vienna , and in 1908 he received the gold state medal. In 1922 Hegenbarth was awarded the title of professor. From 1920 to 1923 he was President of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Other awards he received were the silver medal of honor of the Vienna Künstlerhaus (1929) and the gold jubilee medal (1936).
In 1938, after the annexation of Austria and the beginning of National Socialist rule, he was expelled from the Künstlerhaus. These and other difficulties in the coming years were due to the fact that Hegenbarth was married to a Jewish woman, the daughter of the composer Karl Goldmark , Mina. Although the President of the Künstlerhaus, Rudolf Eisenmenger , succeeded in getting Hegenbarth admitted to the Reich Chamber of Culture in 1943 , the latter remained penniless and soon died completely impoverished. He was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 31 B, Row 1, No. 21).
