Ernst Heilemann (born August 8, 1870 in Berlin ; died April 9, 1936 in Kitchener (Ontario) ) was a German painter and draftsman , graphic artist and caricaturist who was known for his "humorous texts with their little personalities".

biography

Heilemann studied briefly at the Academy of Arts in Berlin and then trained to self-taught on study trips to Italy, France, Great Britain and North America on. Subsequently, he worked in Berlin as an illustrator for magazines youth , the Meggendorfer leaves and Simplicissimus . He lived on Schleswiger Ufer 17.

“There were two main focuses in the work of the Berlin artist. In winter these were works for the Berlin Carnival and in summer those that were thematically dedicated to bathing life in Bansin . "

His relaxed and at the same time photographically exact painting style has a high recognition value. With Simplicissimus, for which he provided almost 190 drawings between 1898 and 1912, he followed in the footsteps of the late Ferdinand von Rezniček . It is not known why the collaboration with this magazine did not last. Like Rezniček, Heilemann portrayed sophisticated city life in lascivious situations and was thus a chronicler of Berlin's lavish festivals. He knew how to give his portraits of women a special aura. He also specialized in upper-class summer retreat in the seaside resorts of the Baltic Sea. Even before the First World War , he spent the summer regularly in Bansin on the Baltic Sea. In 1922 he bought a villa there.

He was friends with the artists Ignatius Taschner , whose death mask he took off, and Eduard Thöny , whom he portrayed.

In addition to his illustrations - also for book publishers such as Hans Bondy, Berlin, S. Fischer and Ullstein Verlag , he worked as a figure, portrait and landscape painter. In 1905 he was represented at the Venice Biennale . Ernst Heilemann was a member of the German Association of Artists . From 1926 to 1936 he was a member of the Association of Berlin Artists .

In May 1929, Heilemann made one of several portraits of Adolf Hitler , who went to his studio for this.
