Ernst Hugo Heinrich Pfitzer (born March 26, 1846 in Königsberg , † December 3, 1906 in Heidelberg ) was an East Prussian , German botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Pfitzer ".

Life

Ernst Hugo Heinrich Pfitzer studied with Carl Gustav Sanio (1832–1891), Robert Caspary and Wilhelm Hofmeister . In 1872 he became professor of botany and director of the Heidelberg Botanical Garden . He used its rich orchid stocks to develop a new orchid system that took into account both vegetative and floral characteristics. This improved the systematic structure of John Lindley . In his work Morphological Studies on the Orchid Flower , he named numerous genera , including Paphiopedilum . He is one of the botanical correspondents for Charles Darwin .

In 1906 he visited England for the last time to speak at the International Conference on Hybridization and Cross-Breeding , which became groundbreaking for the nomenclature of horticultural varieties. In his contribution Hybridization as a proof of natural affinity among orchids , he first addressed the need to name the hybrids between genera and to classify them morphologically and systematically.

In 1880 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina , since 1899 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

Honor taxon

In 1998 Karlheinz Senghas named the orchid genus Pfitzeria .
