Ernst Skrička (born June 4, 1946 in Vienna ; † June 29, 2020 ) was an Austrian graphic artist and painter . He lived in Heinrichs bei Weitra ( Waldviertel ) and Vienna.

Life

Ernst Skrička's interest in art was aroused early on by his parents. He also received significant impulses from Professor Josef Stoitzner at the Stubenbastei grammar school in Vienna. Ernst Skrička studied from 1964 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Maximilian Melcher and graduated in 1970 with a teaching diploma for art and craft education and a diploma in academic graphic design. For his artistic diploma thesis, the monumental etching diës irae , he received the academy award. At the same time, Skrička was a full listener at the University of Vienna, where he studied history as a major and art history and philosophy as minor subjects up to the doctoral stage, but did not graduate. In 1969 he had his first exhibition participation: the 6 Melcher students Tone Fink, Franco Lago, Paul Pichler, Ernst Skrička, Wolfgang Stifter and Erich Steininger showed prints in the Vienna Secession.

In 1970 Skrička began teaching at a Viennese grammar school. Also in 1970 he and his college friend Erich Steininger founded their own graphic workshop in Vienna-Leopoldstadt, Vorgartenstrasse 211; this studio community existed for 43 years. The unusually large etching press that Skrička had made with a roller width of 140 cm enabled both artists to print monumental formats.

In 1972 he married his history colleague Nina Bouczek and moved into their new apartment at Mühlschüttel in Vienna-Floridsdorf. In 1974 and 1975 the daughters Sonja and Sandra were born. 1975–2008 Skrička was professor for art education at the Pedagogical Academy (from 2005 university) in Vienna-Strebersdorf.

From 1979 the Skričkas also adapted the former customs house in Heinrichs bei Weitra in the Waldviertel, near the border with Bohemia, as a residential and studio house. Nina and Ernst Skrička have lived there all year round since 2008. In 2013/15 Skrička moved his oeuvre, his presses and his material warehouse to Heinrichs. He was buried at the Stadlauer Friedhof .
