Ernst Wilhelm von Hamilton (born February 1744 in Prussia; † November 29, 1811 in Partschwolla near Rastenburg ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

His parents were Bernhard Heinrich von Hamilton (* 1720; † May 17, 1760) and his wife Luise, née von Klingspor (n) . The father was a captain and company commander in the infantry regiment “von Canitz” .

Military career

In 1765 Hamilton came as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Canitz". There he became an ensign on March 6, 1768 and was promoted to prime lieutenant until June 16, 1777 . As such, he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On March 18, 1786 he was staff captain and on June 27, 1787 captain and company commander. On June 6, 1791 he was promoted to major . In the campaign in Poland in 1794, Hamilton distinguished himself in the battle near Wilkowisk. On June 2, 1799 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel , on June 1, 1801 to colonel . On March 15, 1803, Hamilton rose to the command of his regiment. In the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the battle near Soldau and was seriously wounded in the battle of Prussian Eylau . On February 21, 1807 he received the order Pour le Mérite for this .

After the war, on November 20, 1807, he was appointed a member of the Immediate Investigation Commission, but on February 2, 1808, he received his resignation as major general due to his wounding at Preussisch Eylau. Hamilton was to receive 1000 thalers pension , but initially received only 500 thalers "because of his sickly circumstances". On May 5, 1808 he received the Russian Order of St. Vladimir and died on November 29, 1811 on Partschwollen near Rastenburg.

Hamilton married Baroness Wilhelmine Juliane Sophie Schenk von Trautenburg (* 1764) from the Doben family in 1784 . She was the daughter of Friedrich Fabian Schenk von Trautenburg and Katharina Wilhelmine von Hoverbeck . The couple had several children:
