Ernst zur Nieden (born April 30, 1903 in Viernheim , † April 18, 1974 in Wiesbaden ) was a German Protestant clergyman.

life and work

Zur Nieden, a son of pastor Ernst Karl zur Nieden (1874–1958), studied theology in Gießen, Tübingen and Rostock and received his doctorate in 1926 at the University of Gießen . After his first parish positions in Bessungen , Darmstadt and Bad Nauheim , he became a youth pastor in Offenbach in 1929 . In 1933 he moved to the parish office of the Markuskirche in Offenbach and soon became involved with large parts of the community in the Confessing Church . From 1936 on, he was also head of the Evangelical Men's Work in Hesse and Nassau. In 1945 zur Nieden was appointed to the newly formed church leadership of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau and also worked part-time on the establishment of the Evangelical Academy of the Regional Church, which was located first in Echzell and later in Arnoldshain . From 1950 to 1969, as provost in South Nassau, he was in charge of one of the supervisory districts of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau.

Zur Nieden wrote popular books about Christian life and became known to the general public as a spokesperson for the television program Das Wort zum Sonntag . His special commitment was to work with men; From 1945 to 1964 he was the theological director of the men's work of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), and from 1960 also President of the Action Group for Employee Issues.

The provost Ernst to the Nieden Foundation of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau named after him is intended to promote church adult work.

Her marriage to Klara Jungé (* 1907) in 1932 resulted in a son and a daughter.
