Erwin Julius Ritter von Zach (born April 18, 1872 in Vienna , † January 19, 1942 west of Nias in the Indian Ocean ) was an Austrian sinologist .

biography

His parents were the later Lieutenant Field Marshal Paul Ritter von Zach (1831-1891) and his wife Emilie Stadler von Gestirner. His older brother was Colonel Paul Ritter von Zach (1870-1918).

Zach studied a. a. classical Chinese with Franz Kühnert .

From 1901 to 1919 he worked in the Austro-Hungarian consular service in Beijing and Singapore.

Zach translated almost the entire oeuvre of the Chinese poet Lǐ Bái as well as all of the poems by Dù Fǔ and Hán Yù into German. However, many of these translations appeared scattered in specialist journals. Part of his extensive work has now been published by Harrassowitz .

Zach was interned in Sumatra during the Second World War . He later died when the Van Imhoff was sunk .
