Espel biotope

Gravel pit

In 1929 a gravel pit was opened in Espel , where gravel was mined until 1978 . In addition, the site served as a landfill for excavated material, building rubble and, in some cases, rubbish until 1979 . Among other things, discarded rolling stock from the St. Gallen trams was deposited there, and the C 68 and 70 trailer cars served as lounges there.

By decree "for the protection of the biotope Espel" the community Gossau of 16 July 1980, entered into force on 19 February 1981, part of the mining area was declared a nature reserve, the reserve Former gravel pit Espel . By exploiting gravel and sand to a depth of 20 meters, settling basins were created for the washing water, which resulted in today's three large ponds.

The 5.5 hectare amphibian spawning area of national importance (SG600) is used for spawning several amphibian species . Due to the advanced succession , the midwife toads , natterjack toads and tree frogs have disappeared. What remains are the mountain newt , the pond newt , the thread newt , the yellow-bellied toad , the common toad , the water frog and the common frog . In 2018, the biotope belonging to the city of Gossau was handed over to Pro Natura St. Gallen-Appenzell in order to counteract the further siltation . They took measures to prevent further silting up and created new spawning areas for newts, newts and crested newts as well as yellow-bellied toads. The amphibious migration along the cantonal road made it necessary to build an amphibious tail unit, which was built in 2005.

In addition, a large dragonfly fauna can be identified, a total of 38 dragonfly species were identified.

Of the endangered plant species observed in the 2010s, the endangered thick-eared bramble ( Bromus grossus ) and the endangered large marsh buttercup ( Ranunculus lingua ) grow there . In contrast, the highly endangered swamp gladiolus ( Gladiolus palustris ) was used. In contrast, the invasive neophyte Canadian goldenrod ( Solidago canadensis agg. ) Spreads there .

The biotope is a popular destination. Pro Natura plans to upgrade the biotope with information boards and an observation platform and an observation walkway on the water.

retirement home

The community home or old people's home Espel with a formerly attached farm has existed since 1838. The orphanage in Gossau, located on the same property, existed from 1894 to 1965. After its closure, the buildings were handed over to the community home. In 2019, the operator, Sana Fürstenland , announced that it would close due to the dilapidated condition of the old people's home.
