Essence is a Danish thrash metal band from Aalborg . The band is signed to Spinefarm Records and has released three studio albums to date.
history
The band was founded in 2005 by the students Lasse Skov ( vocals , guitar ), Mark Drastrup (guitar), Tobias Nefer ( bass , vocals) and Martin Haumann ( drums ). Initially, the band played cover versions and later began to write their own songs. Two years later the band released the EP Art in Imperfection , before the debut album Lost in Violence was released in 2011 via Ultimhate Records . Essence played numerous tours in Denmark and occurred a. a. in the opening act of In Flames . This was followed by a European tour with Vader and Krisiun .
In spring 2012, the band recorded their second studio album Last Night of Solance under the direction of producer Peter Tägtgren . After Tobias Nefer left the band before the start of the recording, Lasse Skov and Peter Tägtgren played the bass. Also in 2012, Essence took part in the Rock the Nation band competition and won the competition. The band was then signed by NoiseArt Records , who released the album on March 29, 2013. Essence played at various festivals such as Copenhell , Beastival or the Metalfest .
Drummer Martin Haumann left the band in late 2013 and was replaced by Nikolaj Kjærgaard. Two European tours followed for the band, first with Hypocrisy and Hate and then with Mercenary and Omnium Gatherum . Essence also opened in Copenhagen for Megadeth . In 2014 Essence received the Aalborg Municipality Culture Prize . Together with hip-hop producer Rune Rask , the band began work on their third studio album, Prime . Essence were signed to Spinefarm Records in the spring of 2015 and released the album on October 2nd, 2015.

Manuel Latton (aka inhonorus) from Legacy magazine writes that you can still hear the Bay Area Thrash very strongly from the Danish debut album Lost In Violence and that there are similarities to Mortal Sin , but that the band on Prime is too strong experimented with the melody lines and thus completely moved away from the Thrash Metal of the early days.
