Eugen Stollreither (born December 25, 1874 in Munich ; † March 31, 1956 ) was a German librarian .

Life

Eugen Stollreither was the son of the post office director Leonhard Stollreither and his wife Elisabeth, née Birzer. He attended the Ludwigsgymnasium in Munich and the grammar school in Neuburg an der Donau . From 1893 he studied at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich newer philology a . a. with Karl Borinski , Hermann Breymann and Moriz Carrière . In 1896 he passed the state examination in Romance and 1897 in English. He became a volunteer in 1897 , an intern in 1898 and finally an assistant at the Bavarian Court and State Library in Munich. He served as the director of the lending office until he was temporarily retired in 1921 for health reasons. On May 1, 1924, he took over the management of the Erlangen University Library , which he fundamentally modernized. In addition to a contemporary cataloging of the holdings, he devoted himself to the task of making the library's special collections known to an academic public. From 1928 onwards, printed catalogs of the graphic collection, the coin and medal collection, the Latin manuscripts, the illuminated manuscripts, the old book covers and the letter collection of the botanist Christoph Jacob Trew from the 18th century appeared. On November 14, 1930, Stollreither was appointed honorary professor, and library science was recognized as a subject by the university.

In the context of the book burning that took place in Erlangen on May 12, 1933 on the Schlossplatz, Stollreither was exposed to a campaign directed against himself . It started with a letter to the editor in the Fränkische Hochschulzeitung , a news paper published by the University of Erlangen . Stollreither was charged with refusing to include Adolf Hitler's book Mein Kampf in the holdings of the university library's academic reading rooms. Likewise, reference was made to his Catholic denomination, which was in contrast to the Protestant character of the university and the majority of the student body. In June, Julius Streicher's hate speech Der Stürmer continued the defamation under the heading “The Nazifresser Dr. Stollreither von Erlangen ”, whereby Stollreither also came under fire for his membership in the Bavarian People's Party . Further attacks followed in the summer in the Berlin weekly Fridericus and in the Völkischer Herold . An application by National Socialist students to remove Stollreither from his post under the law to restore the civil service was refused by the responsible ministry in December 1933.

Eugen Stollreither remained in office throughout the Nazi period. He also continued to work on the board of directors of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum . In 1936 he was one of two representatives of the University of Erlangen on the advisory board in preparation for the 250th anniversary of Neustadt Erlangen. Only in April 1948, at the age of 71, did he hand over the management of the university library to his successor. Stollreither died in 1956.

In 1937 Eugen Stollreither's dictionary of the book became. Introduction to the knowledge of writing, books and the library as volume 1 of the humanistic traditions obligatory book series Dieterich Collection announced. When the edition had to be discontinued due to the war in 1944, this volume - like 43 others - had not yet been published.
