Chapel of St. Georg in Eulenschwang

Eulenschwang is a village in the municipality of Egling in the Upper Bavarian district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen . About 60 people live in the hamlet . It is located 21 kilometers south of Munich . The development essentially consists of five farms and a chapel.

history

Eulenschwang found its first historical significance as early as the time of the Celts , although very little information is available about this. Traditional information says that the first written mention of Eulenschwang took place on the occasion of an exchange of goods between Bishop Lantpert , who ruled in Freising from 937 to 957 , and his Vogt Sigimot with a nobleman named Diotker. At that time this place was called "Egulesuvanc", which means something like "Meadows of Egilo". From this one can conclude that Eulenschwang is older than the surrounding towns, such as B. Endlhausen.

In the 11th century Eulenschwang gained fame primarily through an important noble family who lived in the Maierhof of the Tegernsee Monastery . Bernhard von Eulenschwang, who had a large area of manorial influence, was both a vassal of Count Otto II von Dießen-Andechs and married to his daughter Elisabeth. As a legal successor to the Andechs family, Eulenschwang later became a ducal fiefdom until it finally passed into the possession of the Tegernsee Monastery in 1492.

In 1829 Eulenschwang was incorporated into the community of Endlhausen , which also included the surrounding hamlets of Attenham, Sonnenham, Geilertshausen, Kolbing and Neukolbing. As part of the regional reform in Bavaria , the community of Endlhausen was incorporated into the community of Egling on May 1, 1978.

Chapel of St. George

The Catholic Chapel of St. George is located in Eulenschwang. It is one of the architectural monuments in Egling and its furnishings are also under monument protection. When Eulenschwang was taken over by the Tegernsee Monastery, the Benedictine abbey also owned the Eulenschwanger Höfe. The chapel may have been donated by Abbot Quirin around 1500. Part of this chapel is an early Baroque high altar, which was most likely created in a Wolfratshausen altar workshop. Among other things, this chapel has a figure of St. Anna selbdritt that has been preserved from the late Gothic period . Another feature is a bust of God the Father, which is attributed to the sculptor Georg Wunderl. Structural changes were made around 1650. Shortly after the secularization in Bavaria , the chapel was in danger of being demolished. In May 1899 it was damaged by fire. The western gable wall and the roof turret then had to be replaced.

For the fundamental renovation of the St. Georg chapel between 1989 and 1992, the pregnant owls had a new bell cast. Furthermore, a Georgi ride is held in honor of St. George according to an old custom .
