Mobile missile base
The Mobile Rocket Base ( MORABA ) is a division of the DLR Space Operations and Astronaut Training in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich . MORABA has been conducting scientific high-altitude research missions with unmanned rockets and balloons since the 1960s and has developed the necessary mechanical and electrical systems. Its areas of application include high-atmosphere research, microgravity research, astronomy, geophysics, materials science and hypersonic research.
Under the name EuroLaunch , MORABA offers international launch services for high altitude research balloons and rockets in cooperation with SSC Esrange . Since 1971 there has also been a cooperation with the Brazilian Instituto de Aeronáutica e Espaço (IAE) of the Departamento de Ciência e Tecnologia Aeroespacial (DCTA).
MORABA facilities
Mobile infrastructure
The mobile infrastructure includes the mobile ground stations and antenna systems for telemetry (reception of measurement data) and telecommand (transmission of control commands), as well as orbit tracking radar stations ("Range Instrumentation Radar") for precise flight path measurement. This also includes support systems on the ground for communication, power supply, etc. The main tasks are tracking the trajectory of research rockets or sounding balloons , high-frequency data reception, data processing, distribution and archiving. Transport, construction and maintenance of the mobile stations, as well as mission preparation are also part of the tasks.
Electric flight systems
The group of electrical flight systems develops, builds and qualifies the electrical and electronic systems required on board the rockets and balloons. This includes onboard computer systems, control and measurement technology, data processing and telemetry components, as well as high-frequency transmission technology. The construction of floor systems such as the EGSE (Electrical Ground Support Equipment) is also part of the job.
Mechanical flight systems
In the mechanical flight systems working group, structural calculations, aerodynamic and thermal analyzes are carried out, and the configuration and structure of the payload and the entire vehicle are planned and carried out. Likewise, the integration of the scientific experiments and the balancing of the finished payload. Separation systems, ignition systems, payload recovery systems, payload position control systems and flight position stabilization systems are developed in the group.
Launch services
The tasks of the launch services group include inspection, conversion and storage of the rocket motors and pyrotechnics, construction of the mobile launch ramps, assembly of the rocket stages and ignition systems, assembly of the payload and the rocket motors, and loading the rocket into the launch pad. Furthermore, the support of flight safety, calculation of trajectories, aerodynamic calculations, and selection of the missile configuration.

history
The mobile rocket base emerged from the "Working Group for Space Research", a joint establishment of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) and the former German Aviation Research Institute (DVL). This working group was founded in 1965 and had its first seat in Munich-Schwabing.
The first mobile campaign to study the solar eclipse in May 1966 on the Greek island of Evia on behalf of the European Space Research Organization (ESRO) demonstrated that it was possible to bring extensive technical and scientific equipment to a launch site that was difficult to access at a given time and build there.
The beginnings: atmospheric research
In cooperation with the MPE , a campaign to research the earth's magnetic field took place in Esrange (Sweden) in the spring of 1967 . With five Nike- Apache rockets, artificial barium clouds ( northern lights ) were generated at a height of approx. 100 km , which made the magnetic field lines visible for the recording.
After the spring campaign in 1967, the increasing number of employees made it necessary to move to Garching in the MPE . The South Board of Directors of the German Aerospace Research and Research Institute (DFVLR) decided on April 2, 1969 to move the mobile missile base to the Oberpfaffenhofen center. Here it is still based in the facility "Space Operations and Astronaut Training" of the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
In addition to the launch sites in Scandinavia ( Kiruna and Andenes ), Sardinia, Wallops Island and Matagorda Island (USA), Greenland , Trivandrum (India), Woomera (Australia), Huelva (Spain) and Natal (Brazil) were also used for the launches of payloads frequented various scientific areas. With the infrastructure now in place, it was possible to carry out several campaigns at different launch sites at the same time. The peak of the rocket campaigns at that time was reached in 1984 with the Map Wine campaign under the scientific direction of the University of Wuppertal. During this mission, coordinated launches from Andenes, Esrange, Lista (southern Norway) and Kagoshima (Japan) were carried out simultaneously from the mobile missile base. In the years that followed, sounding rockets were mainly used in the field of atmospheric research and the causes of global warming.
New areas of application: microgravity research
With the start of the "HEATPIPE" payload manufactured by Dornier Friedrichshafen to research the effects of greatly reduced earth gravity, a new area of application for sounding rockets was created . The launch took place on January 22nd, 1976 from Esrange, with the aim of examining the function of heat pipes and latent heat storage systems for use in future satellite projects in weightlessness.
Initially intended as an additional and accompanying program for the German Spacelab missions, the first launch of a TEXUS payload (Technological Experiments Under Weightlessness) with the two-stage Skylark rocket from Esrange took place on December 13, 1977 . In the following years up to four TEXUS missions (6 minutes of microgravity) with a large number of experiments were flown annually. The Swedish MASER program, the MAXUS program (13 minutes of microgravity time), and the MiniTEXUS program (3 minutes of microgravity time) were under the auspices of European Space in order to be able to serve the constantly increasing number of experiments with the most varied of requirements and objectives Agency (ESA) launched.
Other tasks: launch of altitude research balloons
As early as May 1975, the mobile rocket base was involved in the work with altitude research balloons during the balloon flight of the 2.5-ton “Spectro-Stratoscope” instrument in Palestine (Texas) with the processing of the PCM data of the payload . In the years that followed, the rapidly developed balloon infrastructure was used on many flights from the Dornier airfield in Oberpfaffenhofen, as well as from the Leipheim airfield located near Ulm. With the Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy in Lindau , international balloon flights were carried out in Aire-sur-l'Adour (France), Mendoza (Argentina) and Hyderabad (India) to determine the chemical composition (and pollution) of the atmosphere in the various Explore heights and latitudes.
Since the flight options from Oberpfaffenhofen were increasingly restricted due to the rapidly increasing air traffic, the last take-offs of large altitude research balloons (approx. 600,000 cubic meters) took place as part of the testing of the MIKROBA drop body from 1988 to 1992 on Esrange , Kiruna .
Technology transfer: from rocket technology to satellites
In the early years of German rocket altitude research, the payloads were designed and built by engineers and technicians at Dornier , MBB , Kayser-Threde and ERNO . Parallel to the withdrawal of Dornier and MBB from the construction of payloads for sounding rockets , mechanical and electrical flight systems were developed and tested at MORABA - in addition to the already existing yaw rate and attitude control modules and parachute recovery systems - which are difficult or impossible to obtain on the commercial market were. The first and successful use of a data acquisition and transmission / reception system qualified for sounding rockets was the "EXPRESS" re-entry experiment. In the late autumn of 1994, a complete transmitting and receiving station with all the necessary functions was set up by MORABA in the middle of the South Australian desert and operated over the turn of the year. After the launch with a Japanese satellite launcher and a seven-day orbit around the world, the landing of the EXPRESS capsule near the town of Coober Pedy (Australia) was planned. Due to a malfunction of the launcher, however, the capsule was placed in an elliptical orbit with a very low perigee height and landed in Africa after just a few orbits of the earth.
Other uses of MORABA developments in space missions were experiments on the Russian space station MIR and the DLR satellite BIRD .
Latest development: hypersonic research - the flying wind tunnel
Similar to the initially new use of the rocket platform for microgravity research, the use of sounding rockets as a flying wind tunnel continues to increase. With their help, large models can be brought to speeds of over Mach 12 and measurement times of up to one minute can be achieved. For the DLR experiment SHEFEX (Sharp Edge Flight Experiment), the payload subsystems and the missile system were designed and built by MORABA. The project was successfully completed when it started in Andenes (Norway) in October 2005. Further experiments of this kind were the also successfully completed follow-up project SHEFEX II (started in June 2012), as well as HiFIRE and Scramspace for the development of a scramjet engine.
