The European Championships are a sporting event that brings together the already existing continental European championships of certain sports every four years. The premiere took place from August 2 to 12, 2018 in the host cities of Glasgow ( Scotland ) and Berlin ( Germany ). Since the participating continental sports federations hold their European championships at a different rhythm as standard (annually in the case of gymnastics , rowing , triathlon and cycling , every two years in the case of athletics and swimming ), only those European championships will take place here that are held in this four-year cycle can be integrated.

history

The European Athletics Federation , the Ligue Européenne de Natation , the Union Européenne de Cyclisme , the World Rowing Association and the European Triathlon Union agreed in 2015 to organize their individual championships as part of "European Championships". On October 23, 2015, the associations for artistic gymnastics and golf joined. The individual associations and the host cities organize the individual championships with a coordinated schedule and under a uniform, common brand.

Other European sports associations were also asked to participate before the first European Championships. Equestrian sport was not involved because, according to the President of the European Equestrian Federation, the organizers were only interested in show jumping .

The first European Championships took place from August 2 to 12, 2018. The European Athletics Championships , the European Swimming Championships , the European Cycling Championships , the European Rowing Championships and the European Triathlon Championships as well as the European Gymnastics Championships and the newly launched European Golf Team Championships were held. The organizers were Berlin for athletics and Glasgow for the other sports. Around 1,500 athletes took part in the competitions in Berlin, while around 3,000 athletes fought for medals in Glasgow.

In March 2019, the City Council of Munich decided to run for the European Championships in 2022. In November, Munich was awarded the contract. The European Swimming Championships will not take place as part of the European Championships 2022, but another sport that has not yet been determined will complement the program.
