The European Major Exhibition Centers Association (EMECA) (German: Association of leading European exhibition centers) is an association of European exhibition centers that came together in 1992 in Paris , France . The EMECA secretariat has been in Brussels since April 2008 . The aim of EMECA is to continuously professionalize the equipment of the exhibition grounds, the organization and the exhibitor and visitor service of the 18 members.

background

Of the 45 exhibition companies worldwide that have more than 100,000 square meters of exhibition space, 34 are in Europe . The 18 members of EMECA alone hold around 1,200 trade fairs annually with around 388,000 exhibitors and 43.5 million visitors on a gross exhibition area of around 36 million square meters. According to their own estimates, the exhibiting companies generate a turnover of around 800 billion euros through their participation in the trade fair. According to a study by the international auditing and consulting firm KPMG , the economic effects of the EMECA exhibition venues are around 16 billion euros.

The takeover of the two private trade fair organizers Exposium and Comexpo in 2005 by the large Parisian exhibition centers and the subsequent merger of the two large Paris exhibition centers Paris Expo and Paris Nord Villepinte / Le Bouget to form VIPARIS, but also the merger of the exhibition centers Basel and Zurich in 2001 are reactions to the intensification of international competition. In addition, there is cooperation between Milan and Hanover or Frankfurt and Rome, for example. The aim of the partnerships is to strengthen Europe as a trade fair location.

task

For more than 15 years, EMECA has been helping its members - hall owners and trade fair organizers - to act as international platforms. The association promotes business and trade for those involved in the trade fair and supports joint projects by industries and companies. Another task of EMECA is to promote the global influence of its members and to increase the reputation of Europe as a trade fair location on an international level. This is achieved through continuous further development of the trade fair concepts, the development of innovative services for exhibitors and visitors as well as the expansion of the infrastructure of the exhibition grounds. An important task in this context is to optimize transparency and the flow of information.

Strengthening the role of medium-sized companies in Europe

Many of the exhibitors at the EMECA exhibition grounds are small and medium-sized enterprises ( SMEs ), for which participation in a trade fair is a high cost factor. However, SMEs are key to the European economic system - they contribute to maintaining social security and maintaining jobs. In the European Union there are around 23 million SMEs that provide almost 100 million jobs and make up 99 percent of the entire company portfolio. The European Commission has therefore founded the “ Euro Info Center ” (EIC), which is supported by EMECA as a partner. This network with almost 300 contact points has been committed to promoting entrepreneurial activity across Europe for the creation and maintenance of strong SMEs in all industrial sectors for more than ten years. Among other things, SMEs are supported financially and organizationally when participating in trade fairs - from preparation to practical implementation. One example is the “America Latina-Invest” (Al-Invest) economic development program for Latin America: The program launched by the EU in 1995 makes it easier for SMEs from Latin America to participate in European trade fairs. Under the direction of Eurochambres, the European umbrella association of chambers of industry and commerce, EMECA is responsible for the implementation. To date, more than 87,000 SMEs have participated. In addition, EMECA advises Eurochambres on the selection of the eligible trade fairs.

Further main topics

Other topics at EMECA include dealing with the protection of intellectual property, barrier-free access to exhibition venues and energy-efficient management. EMECA calls on the EU to discuss intellectual property law more intensively in Europe and worldwide. In 2007 EMECA published a study on the accessibility of European trade fair venues, which examined the state of European trade fair venues in terms of the modern needs of exhibitors and visitors. At the end of 2009, EMECA decided to carry out a study on the energy efficiency of new exhibition halls and those in need of renovation. The new premises are intended to provide information for the energy-efficient construction of further new halls. In the old building it is to be examined which measures have to be taken during the renovation in order to permanently reduce energy consumption.

Intellectual Property Protection

EMECA calls for the EU to, intellectual property rights for intellectual property in Europe, and to discuss world stronger.
