Evangelina "Eva" Estrada Kalaw (birth name: Evangelina Reynada Estrada ; born June 16, 1920 in Murcia , Tarlac Province ; † May 25, 2017 in Manila ) was a Filipino politician who was a member of the Senate from 1965 to 1972 .

Life

Evangelina "Eva" Reynada Estrada, daughter of Dr. Salvador Estrada nd Demetria Reynada, started studying pedagogy at the University of the Philippines after attending school and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Education). She married the entrepreneur Teodor V. Kalaw and had four children with him, including Teodoro Kalaw III, who took part in the 1972 Summer Olympics in shooting with the free pistol over 50 m . After completing her postgraduate studies in social work , she worked as a teacher and lecturer at Far Eastern University , the National Teachers College and Centro Escolar University . In addition, she was voluntarily involved in social and socio-political activities and was awarded the title Outstanding Volunteer Social Worker of the Year . She was also the founder and first president of the Jayceerettes , the women's organization of the Junior Chamber International , and first country chairwoman of the women 's organization Samahang Filipina . She also acted as director of the League of Women Voters and the Chamber for Domestic Industry. She was also involved in a symbolic salary of one peso for the Manila City Council for the Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency and as a member of the board of directors of the Special Child Study Center for Retarded Children , the Association for Research on Allergies ( Association for the Study of Allergens), as chairperson of the Youth Welfare Council, the Presidential Peace and Amelioration Campaign, as well as in the scout movement , the Philippine Red Cross, the citizens' assembly of women's clubs in the Philippines (Civic Assembly of Women's Clubs in the Philippine) , the friends of José Rizal (Kababaihang Rizalista) and numerous other organizations.

In the election to the Senate on November 9, 1965, Eva Estrada Kalaw was elected Senator for the Nacionalista Party as one of thirty candidates in the fifth of eight places to be awarded with 3,190,700 votes (41.9 percent). In the Senate election on November 8, 1971, she was re-elected as senator with the fifth-best result with 4,464,367 votes (47.4 percent) out of 16 candidates for eight available places and belonged to the Senate until martial law was imposed on September 21, 1972 by President Ferdinand Marcos . During her tenure in the Senate, she chaired the Committee on Games, Amusements and Tourism and the Committee on national Minorities . On August 2, 1971, along with Jovito Salonga , Sergio Osmeña, Jr. , Gerardo Roxas , Salipada K. Pendatun , Genaro Magsaysay , Ramon Mitra , Eddie Ilarde , Roberto Oca Jr. and John Henry Osmeña, she was among the injured in the bombing of a party meeting on the proclamation of Ramon Bagatsing as candidate for mayoral for Manila in the Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, a district of Manila. Nine people were killed in the attack, while 95 people were injured, some seriously.
