The Evangelical Church in Oppurg in the Saale-Orla district in Thuringia already existed in the high Middle Ages, was first mentioned in 1351 and was built in its present form in the late 17th century. It has valuable historical furnishings.

history

During excavations , remains of two Romanesque predecessor churches were found. The church is first documented in 1351. It was probably originally a choir tower church , which was rebuilt in 1696 to its present form. The local rule of the Counts von Renow and Biberstein, who also had the right of patronage , had the church furnished by an artist who was influenced by Italy or South Tyrol.

The church was restored with funds from the German Foundation for Monument Protection .

description

The old choir tower was incorporated into the nave of the church when the church was enlarged in 1696 , while maintaining the hereditary burial in its basement. The church interior, which has a three-aisled appearance due to the drawn-in columns, is spanned by a magnificently painted stucco ceiling with dogmatic and passion motifs.

The towering altar with an altar overbuilding on columns is decorated with a picture of the Entombment and one of the Resurrection of Christ. At the height of the altar plate there is a rock grotto with an Easter depiction. In front of the altar is the pulpit and the baptism with an angel holding a cornucopia in the bowl. The wooden lectern is painted white. The organ on a small gallery opposite the altar was created by Franz Schilling in Schleiz . The crucifix attached to the east side of the tower base dates from the 17th century, the secondary figures are older. There are also several historical tombstones inside the church.

In the mighty late Romanesque church tower hang two bells , the smaller one is made of bronze and the larger one is made of steel .

The old sacristy , located in a vault under the patron's box, was prepared as a community room and for devotional purposes.
