History and architecture

View of the altar

In 1648 the Reformed communities on the Lower Rhine were given the right to build churches. Instead of a rooster, they sometimes put an angel with a trumpet , also known as Geusendaniel , on the roof as a sign of fought hardship of faith and preserved community . At the end of the roof ridge there is such an angel as a weather vane.

The first church, built in 1653, fell victim to a fire in 1717, along with 10 surrounding houses.

The rectangular hall made of plastered and whitewashed brick was built from 1720 to 1722 according to plans by Bartolomeo Salla; he was a wandering architect who knew a harmonious, simple baroque style . The client was the evangelical reformed community. Even before completion, the tower collapsed because the craftsmen did not follow Salla's plans in order to cut costs. Due to static errors and poor construction, constant safety and restoration measures are necessary. Inside, a mirror ceiling is drawn in over a pilaster structure . The choir closes on three sides .

The tower is crowned with a lantern .

A sacristy was added in 1904.

From 2000 to 2001 the building was extensively renovated.

Furnishing

  • The organ loft and the sacristy were added to the apex of the choir during the restoration in 1904
  • The richly carved, unmounted pulpit was installed in 1723
  • Two chandelier crowns made of brass are from around 1700

Church window

The original windows of the town church were kept simply white in the Reformation style, but around 1900 they were replaced by colored motif windows. These were destroyed in the Second World War, only a few fragments could be preserved and used as fragments in the central window. In 1976, Pastor Ronny Schneider suggested the new furnishing with pictorial windows. These were designed in 1980 by the glass artist Werner Persy from Trier . The resurrection as well as the suffering on the cross are part of the pictorial program of the theme cycle consisting of 15 windows.

organ

The organ goes back to an instrument that was built in 1722 by the organ builder Thomas Weidtman (Ratingen). The organ case has been completely preserved to this day. The work has been renewed several times. The instrument was rebuilt and expanded at the end of the 19th century by the court organ builders Gebrüder Euler (Gottsbüren bei Hofgeismar), and completely reorganized again after the Second World War. The organ has 19 stops on two manuals and a pedal. The actions are mechanical.
