publication

Even in Darkness was released in November 2001 almost a year after the final breakthrough of OutKast , who are part of the Dungeon Family, to take advantage of their increased popularity. However, a best-of album from OutKast was released shortly afterwards , which was promoted more strongly by the record label LaFace than Even in Darkness . With 42nd place on the Billboard charts , it was unable to build on their successes. The single Trans DF Express could not place in the charts.

Reviews

The album received mostly positive reviews and, like Stankonia , often compared to the P-Funk works of George Clinton . According to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Clinton is "one of the few who are able to penetrate as far into the musical future and past as the Dungeon Family."

“Even In Darkness” picks up where “Stankonia”, Outkast's brilliant album last year, left off. It's an epic futuristic funk production that spans gospel to the latest electronics and leaves the usual parameters of hip-hop or R'n'B far behind. There is nothing here that can be described as “minimal”. And if an extended moan over a beat is already being sold as a song today, baroque opulence prevails on this album . Sophisticated structures and innumerable tonal resources are linked with intricate rhythms and powerful instrumentation. "

The All Music Guide only gives the album three out of five points due to the lack of “ Ms. Jackson -quality songwriting ”, but, besides the raps of the members, the production is praised and Even in Darkness is still one of the most creative rap albums published in 2001.

"(...) despite the wealth of talent on Even in Darkness , you can't help feeling a little disappointed - the end result isn't quite equal to the sum of its parts. (...) as wonderful as this album's production is, the songwriting is lacking. Everyone wants to rap on this album - over a dozen Family members, to be precise - but no one seems interested in writing songs. "

RapReviews.com praises the album and gives it nine out of ten points.

"The hallmark of this album is soul - no matter which song you are listening to, the deep funk of it seeps through the headphones and envelops you like a fog. (...) [They] prove that there's no reason that shaking your ass and freeing your mind shouldn't go together in the same track at the same time. "

"Most hip-hop posse albums are more neighborhood charity projects than all-star jam sessions, but Even in Darkness is a great success, every bit as cohesive (and at least as good) as the latest release by a certain Staten Island confederation of roughly equal size. "
