Ewald Freiherr von Kleist (born September 21, 1667 ; † April 29, 1746 ) was a lieutenant general from the Electorate of Cologne .

Life

Ewald came from the noble family von Kleist in the Pomerania region . He was the son of Wilhelm Christian von Kleist (1636–1726), heir to Pumlow and Timmenhagen , and his wife Idea Reichmuth, born von Kleist from the Zadtkow family .

As a six-year-old Kleist was handed over to the custody of the same-named curb-Bavarian secret councilor and deputy governor of the Upper Palatinate, a maternal great-uncle, in Amberg , where he was brought up in Catholicism . He was in personal service and was subject to the support of the Elector and Archbishop Joseph Clemens of Bavaria . 1687 Kleist began his career as a cadet , promoted in 1690 to Lieutenant and in 1691 to captain . In 1695 he was Chamberlain of the Electorate of Cologne . In 1715 he was promoted to general sergeant and after the Peace of Rastatt he cleared Bonn from the Dutch with a "hard hand" for his master . As a result, in 1716 Kleist became bailiff to Hart and governor of the Rheinberg fortress and vice-governor of Bonn. In 1727 Kleist was the owner of the Electoral Cologne General-Kleist Regiment and Commendator of the Order of St. Michael .

Kleist married Maria Anna Freiin von Manteuffel . She was the daughter of Franz Joseph Freiherr von Manteuffel from the House of Broitz , Bavarian Chamberlain and Colonel and Johanna Friederica Ridt. The marriage resulted in eleven sons and two daughters, including:
